Illusory drifting within a window that moves across a flickering background
When a striped disk moves across a flickering background, the stripes paradoxically seem to move faster than the disk itself. We attribute this new illusion to reverse-phi motion, which slows down the disk rim but does not affect the stripes.
متن کاملIllusory jitter in a static stimulus surrounded by a synchronously flickering pattern
The eyes are always moving even during fixation, making the retinal image move concomitantly. While these motions activate early visual stages, they are excluded from one's perception. A striking illusion reported here renders them visible: a static pattern surrounded by a synchronously flickering pattern appears to move coherently in random directions. There was a positive correlation between ...
متن کاملDoes illusory flickering result from rhythmic sampling of visual stimuli?
Approximately a century ago, the oscillatory character of human neural activity was revealed by the discovery of electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms. Since then, numerous observations have helped to decipher the functional meaning of brain oscillations. Most of the studies have focused on the alpha rhythm (8 –13 Hz), whose strong spectral power is clearly modulated by visual stimulation, visu...
متن کاملTracking Drifting Concepts by Time Window Optimisation
This paper addresses the task of learning concept descriptions from streams of data. As new data are obtained the concept description has to be updated regularly to include the new data. In this case we can face the problem that the concept changes over time. Hence the old data become irrelevant to the current concept and have to be removed from the training dataset. This problem is known in th...
متن کاملIllusory contours: a window onto the neurophysiology of constructing perception.
Seeing seems effortless, despite the need to segregate and integrate visual information that varies in quality, quantity, and location. The extent to which seeing passively recapitulates the external world is challenged by phenomena such as illusory contours, an example of visual completion whereby borders are perceived despite their physical absence in the image. Instead, visual completion and...
